We always ask for which CMS to select for website development however we don’t think about “what are the requirements? What is the purpose of the website? Its always very hard time to select right CMS to avoid rework or disgrace later on. Same in the case, if we talk of Umbraco vs WordPress, Both CMS have its own merits and limitations. WordPress is Open source CMS developed using PHP and MySql technologies. Currently it is very well known CMS for building website for Blogging, portfolio or even for online web stores. Its core functionality is very basic and it depends on the plugins that user integrates to enhance its functionality that is required.
The good thing about WordPress, it has have a big market for plugins and themes with unlimited functionality and integrations, free as well as premium. However adding too many plugins may increase sites vulnerability if its source is not trusted. Sometime too many plugins results slowness in the website and also create a big challenge for developers to optimize it. It also involves effort to review while selection of plugins. WordPress currently have many plugins for SEO to make your website SEO friendly with search engines for better ranking and visibility.
Its admin panel is user friendly that any user having basic knowledge of CMS can use it to create website within very short timeframe. It has a big helping community that is actively involved in facilitating users to share issue facing with WordPress application.
Its basic admin dashboard is same for everyone but once you add on more plugins it become different and every website have different dashboard depends on the requirements. Most of the wordpress users are count this as cons of wordpress. Now developers have noticed this inconsistency and started categorizing their plugin functionality to place to make it subitem under right and correct dashboard menu item.
Umbraco
Umbraco is Free and open source CMS developed on Microsoft .Net Framework and MS SQL Technologies. It required .Net web hosting for deployment.
You can customize it as much as you want by integrating packages from Umbraco market. It is flexible that you can code your own package and integrate it using its macro functionality. Umbraco requires some .Net development skills to manage its templates and packages integrations. It is exceptional in its functionality and customizability.
Umbraco helping active community is not as big as WordPress currently have, so it need some extra effort to search over the internet when you are facing issues or problem with you Umbraco configurations.
It is more risky to upgrade its version and packages integrations because less number of users have Umbraco installations that means less people have tested most of the packages that are available in the Umbraco market.
Its stability is above average as compared to WordPress, its users are experiencing some bugs in their Umbraco Installations that some time leads to swear problem and only hiring a Developer is the solution.
Once you become an Umbraco expert then you can explore its real power and functionality.
Umbraco and WordPress
One very nice feature which I love the most is, you can organize your Media in sub-directory structure by your own and use it in your web content later on. But WordPress media organization is very messy, it places all the Media (Images, Videos, etc.) under the Media directory and doesn’t allow you to organize it in sub-directory structure.
Umbraco is best if you want freedom in template designing for big corporate website. WordPress is best suits if you want to develop small to medium level website containing few page template.
